Top 21 Online Casinos - Online Casinos Prohibited Down Under
News on U.S. gambling legislation always makes the headlines, but the approach toward gambling at online casinos Down Under is just as tough. Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, advertising of online casinos is prohibited where “it is likely that the majority of the site’s users are physically present in Australia.” The Act carries massive penalties for illegal gambling, but still operators of online casinos seek loopholes in the law.
Gambling services offered by online casinos including online poker machines, roulette, craps and blackjack are all prohibited under the Act, and those contravening the law face stiff penalties. The maximum fine imposed on individuals is $220 thousand Australian dollars per day, while corporations can incur fines up to $1.1 million dollars per day. One might think that such tough anti-gambling legislation would be enough to deter even the largest online casinos. But many online casinos continue to advertise through a variety of websites in the hope of attracting Australian customers.
Law firm Mallesons Stephen Jacques advises it has found numerous breaches of the Interactive Gambling Act. Most of these relate to the publication of advertisements promoting online casinos at Australian websites. While the Interactive Gambling Act is yet to lead to online casinos being prosecuted in court, Mallesons Stephen Jacques believes a precedent will soon be made due to the more severe natures of recent breaches of the Act. Five potential breaches have been reported with more to follow if the law firm’s predictions are correct.
